We seek out over-achieving estates and this top-notch Bordeaux Supérieur is a blend of 60% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 25-acre vineyard, planted in clay and limestone soils, is situated in Salignac, 15 miles northeast of Bordeaux. Cover cropping, green-harvesting and leaf-pulling are the rule, as are tiny yields of less than two tons/acre yielding barely a bottle of wine per vine. Its dark ruby color is followed by soft, round, black currant and black cherry notes as well as hints of spice box and cedar. With sweet tannin and medium body, it is an excellent introduction to a well-made, bargain-priced Bordeaux.
Robert Parker consistently calls Beaulieu Comtes de Tastes “one of Bordeaux’s finest run over-achievers.” Few, if any, Bordeaux properties can match Beaulieu Comtes de Tastes’ record of consistency and value- every vintage this decade has received scores in the 88-90 range, truly remarkable for a Bordeaux selling for under $20.
While the tannins and structure of this wine will definitely let it improve if laid down, this wine will be delightful with food immediately- grilled steak, braised meats, even a simple weekday hamburger or meatloaf meal. This is a wine that will impress, and will not break your bank to open on a weeknight. Parker annually calls Beaulieu Comtes de Tastes “the sleeper of the vintage”. We couldn’t agree more, and we encourage you to discover this wonderful bargain for yourself. Enjoy!
