The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines.
To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size and stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers. And, most importantly, he turned to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling.
Wine Spectator 2009 Top 100 List Focuses on Wines that Offer Exceptional Value
Wine Spectator one of the most influential wine magazines in the United States, announced its Top 100 wines for 2009 late in November. We’re delighted to report that 2008 Dr. L Riesling is listed as wine # 62.
The 2008 Dr. L Riesling from Loosen Bros. is an entry-level Mosel Riesling produced by Ernst Loosen, owner of the highly acclaimed Dr. Loosen estate. Wine Spectator Senior Editor Bruce Sanderson, who reviews German wines for the publication, wrote of the 2008 Dr. L: “Sleek and tangy, showing apricot, lime and mango flavors matched to a lively structure. There’s nice harmony and persistence through the finish.” This wine has a touch of residual sweetness, just enough to balance the ripe acidity. Bravo!
The wine was rated at 90 points and designated a “Best Value."
