Produced in the Luján de Cuyo subregion of Mendoza by the Pelizzatti family, Maipe wines are an expression of the deep rich soils and a commitment to excellence by the young winemaker, Liliana Iannizzotto, and consultant Alberto Antonini.
The wines are produced from grapes grown in Agrelo and Luján de Cuyo, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 3,000 feet above sea level. Agrelo is a cool climate region in Argentina’s premier grape growing area where the soils are deep and textured, which facilitates plant development and confers great body and structure to the wines. Classified among the best areas within the province of Mendoza, the year-long sunny and dry conditions permit almost organic viticulture practices. One of the outstanding features of these regions is the great daily thermal amplitude, with mild days and very cool nights, which allows the developement of a particular richness of polyphenols that improve the wines’ flavors and color.
The Bonarda hails from 30 year old vines and this wine is a textbook expression of this grape variety.
This is a small production specialty of the winery and we were able to snag a small allocation of the 890 cases that came to the US market. This wine is a natural with rich pasta dishes, grilled sausages, and makes a perfect partner to a pizza. We loved the wild berry and violet aromas, as well as the fruit-filled medium-bodied palate with its round, velvety tannins and long finish.
"The purple-colored 2008 Bonarda offers an enticing bouquet of smoke, mineral, and blueberry. Round and ripe on the palate, it has surprising depth and length for its humble price. Drink this succulent wine over the next three years."
