Four Italian wines geared for warmer weather and the changing menus and activities that we all look forward to and enjoy. New foods, fresh veggies, grilled meats, seafood and picnics figure into everyday summer life. Join Lukas Livas at the bar this Saturday for a look at four great wines for this seasonal change.
2008 Tenimenti Conti Neri "Prosecco di Prosecco" Extra Dry; Veneto, Italy
Starting with the brilliant yellow straw color and the persistent tiny bubbles, this terrific, light-bodied, fresh, crisp, pleasingly off-dry Prosecco reveals notes of white flowers, almonds, and honeyed grapefruit in its luscious nose. It is best drunk over the next year. It is a fabulous value!
AWM Regular Price: $14.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $8.09 per bottle or $7.19 by the case
2009 Villa Masetti Pinot Grigio; Venezie, Italy
This estate is one of the key figures in Delle Venezie winemaking due to state-of-the-art equipment and impeccable professionalism. It is fresh and filled with a racy, pure fruit that has a greater underlying depth than most Pinot Grigios. The wine is superbly balanced and would be at its best with seafood or light pasta dishes. It's hard to find a nicer luncheon wine than this, especially with its gentle pear and citrus edged fruit and its pleasantly dry finish.
AWM Regular Price: $11.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $10.79 per bottle or $9.59 by the case
2008 Villa Pillo "Cingalino" Rosso di Toscana; Tuscany, Italy
This wine is composed of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, both varieties being long-term residents in Tuscany. A fun and easy drinking wine right from the happy dressed boar on the label to the bright melangé of red fruits that greet the nose. Medium-bodied, with supple fruit and tannins, this wine has a very pleasant complexity derived from a sojourn of 6 months in second use Taransaud French oak barriques. Highly recommended as a summer- weight red to enjoy with flavorful pastas, cheeses on a picnic, and grilled meats.
AWM Regular Price: $12.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $11.69 per bottle or $10.39 by the case
2004 Az. Agricola Bassanelli "Portosecco" Sangiovese; Tuscany, Italy
The wine exhibits a dark ruby/garnet color, and an ostentatious bouquet of Eucalyptus, dark black-cherries, herbs, cedar, and leather. Dense and concentrated, with adequate acidity, this nicely proportioned Sangiovese would work well with grilled sausages, lamb and rich southern style pasta dishes.
AWM Regular Price: $12.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $11.69 per bottle or $10.39 by the case
Special tasting prices: 10% off the bottle and 20% off by the case, mix or match unless already discounted via a special price or sale price.
