Free Saturday Tasting, Saturday; March 13th., 2010; 1 to 4pm

freesaturday_email.jpgIt is always a treat to have importer Klaus Wittauer in town and even better to have him at the tasting bar so you can feel his enthusiasm for these Austrian wines first hand. We love them too, and Klaus is delighted to show some new wines this go round. So faster than you can say Servus or Grüner Veltliner mark your calendar for this Saturday to plan a visit to the Asheville Wine Market to try these exciting wines and meet Klaus.

2008 Leo Hillinger Small Hill White; Burgenland, Austria This blend of three varieties (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc & Gelber Muskateller) widely planted in Austria, is fruit-filled with lemony notes and hints of elderberry blossoms. The dry, medium-bodied palate, is refreshing, complex, elegant and nicely balanced with lovely fruit flavors and a pleasing acidity. We have watched this wine disappear way too rapidly during meals and other gatherings. It is delicious! Try it yourself and see. Great with spicy dishes, shellfish, salads and seafood. Austrian sunshine in a bottle!
AWM Regular Price: $13.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $12.59 per bottle or $11.19 by the case

2008 Tegernseerhof T-26 Grüner Veltliner; Wachau, Austria A classic example of this grape variety, the 2008 T-26 beckons one into the glass with its abundant fruit, herbs and exotic spices on the nose. This wine exhibits a juicy, fresh melon character on the smooth, polished palate which is infused with minerality and ripe citrus notes as well as aromatic herbs and subtle white pepper perfume. Medium-bodied, elegant and very food friendly, this would pair up nicely with seafood or fowl and any vegetable dish. Finishes with lip-smacking length. Absurdly good value from vineyards in and around the village of Dürnstein on the Danube!
AWM Regular Price: $14.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $13.49 per bottle or $11.99 by the case

2008 Anton Bauer Grüner Veltliner "Ried Rosenberg"; Wagram, Austria The Ried Rosenberg is among the best-known and highest quality Grüner Veltliner vineyards in Austria. With extremely old vines and south facing slopes, this vineyard has produced some of the best Grüner Veltliners in the world. This wine possesses an intensely aromatic nose as well as oodles of ripe fruit balanced perfectly with bright acidity. The soil of this classic vineyard gives this wine a wonderful mineral quality followed by notes of spicy, white pepper on the finish. A natural complement to Asian fusion dishes, don't miss your opportunity to try this lovely wine.

2008 Weingut Strauss Sauvignon Blanc "Gamlitzberg"; Steiermark, Austria This is one of Gust'l Strauss' top wines from a fantastic single vineyard site known as the Gamlitzberg. The unmistakable aromas of currants, elderberries and gooseberries on the nose reappear on the rich, medium-bodied palate. The rich fruit of this wine is supported by a ripe and well focused acidity which pulls the flavors through to the long, fruit-filled finish. Try with rich, herbed fowl or seafood dishes.
AWM Regular Price: $16.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $15.29 per bottle or $13.59 by the case

2008 Weingut Michlits Blaufränkisch; Burgenland, Austria This wine offers up a lovely nose of fresh blackberry and black raspberry with subtle notes of white pepper, herbs, and tobacco leaf. Clear and juicy in its vivid fruit, but with an incipient creaminess, it fills the palate without weighing it down and comes to a satisfyingly juicy if not profoundly long finish. This wine has fleshed out in bottle over the past few months and now offers its full-flavored yet medium-bodied palate as the perfect foil for rich fowl, roasted lamb or spiced goulash dishes.
