This is one of the truly great finds for outstanding sparkling wine. Hubert Clavelin and his two sons have vineyards in the Côte du Jura, a small range of mountains about 30 miles to the east of the Côte D’Or in the province of the Franche-Comté. Within their holding they have a parcel of very high limestone soil that they have planted in Chardonnay and from this parcel they make their sparkling wine, Brut Comté. Their method is the same as champagne; the wine is fermented in the bottle and each bottle is hand-riddled. The care that they take is shown in the very fine quality of the Brut Comte – tasting more like a lesser, true champagne than a sparkling wine from Burgundy. This wine has received great press in The Wine Advocate and is a consistent prizewinner in France. It is ideal for parties, weddings and any celebration.
100% Chardonnay, this wine spends 3 years en tirage and the result is truly amazing. The rich nose of pear accented fruit as well as the toasty character from the methode champenoise make this a wine that competes very favorably with wines costing twice the price. This wine is made in a Brut style and has lots of richness on the palate so it will please a diverse crowd.
"For over two decades, Hubert Clavelin and his importer have been promoting non-vintage Cremant du Jura Brut-Comte Chardonnay Tete de Cuvee, and this latest batch (lot number LBRC05, in tiny print on the back label) - based on the 2005 vintage, and having spent 36 months sur lattes - is as fine as any I can recall, and a wine that deserves to be taken seriously at the dinner table. A hint of Jura-typical pungency figures amid aromas of buckwheat, lime zest, and apple cider. With fine mousse and impressive vinosity, this coats the palate with zesty piquancy and saline, mineral-meaty savor of scallops and bacon. Both fascination and versatility are guaranteed for the coming year."
