2009 Antigal Aduentus Mediterráneo Mendoza, Argentina

Super rich and round, this perfectly aged Mendoza blend is a stunning value!

Every now and then, I'll run across a perfectly stored and aged wine that's drinking at its absolute peak. I'm even more excited when I can get a great deal on that wine and offer it to my local customers at a steal. Let me introduce you to the 2009 Antigal Aduentus Mediterráneo. This luscious red blend is close to 10 years old and it's aged to perfection!

Bodega Antigal was established twenty years on the site of a historic winery in Russell, Maipú, Mendoza,  Argentina. The winery's origin dates back to 1897, making it one of the oldest operational vineyard sites in this part of Mendoza.  The winery operates entirely on a gravity system. This "hands-off" operation works beautifully to reduce tannin and minimize extraction, resulting in wines that retain wonderful lift and freshness.

Right away, you'll notice this is not your typical Mendoza Malbec.

It's a distinctive blend of 40% Malbec, 30% Tempranillo and 30% Syrah. Malbec contributes the luscious, silky dark fruit, Tempranillo adds some additional structure and backbone, and Syrah provides the spice notes.

The real treat is the wonderful nuance gained from nearly 10 years of perfect storage and aging.  Layer upon layer of complexity build as the wine opens in your glass. Give this one plenty of air after uncorking to allow the wine to develop. After a few swirls, you're greeted by aromas of dark berry, blueberry, berry compote, and toasty pie crust, mingling with earthy notes of leather and baking spice. The full, rich palate lingers and lingers with flavors of blueberry, blackberry, tar, chocolate, and coffee. There's still plenty of structure to stand up to any steak, however, the tannins have been beautifully softened by the extended bottle aging.  This is an absolutely gorgeous Malbec blend.

Needless to say, I was blown away by the quality and finesse of this wine, so  I immediately bought everything available in North Carolina. There are just 20 cases available with 10 arriving this week and another 10 next week. This is sure to go quickly!

Stock up on this one for the coming Holidays and treat your family and guests to this beautifully aged gem.  They'll think you spent a lot more than you did!
