Bodegas Borsao’s wines have been a corner stone of our Spanish section for years!
The Bodegas Borsao Co-op (800 members) owns nearly 3 thousand acres in Campo de Borja, roughly three quarters of the appellation. This rocky zone in the foothills of the Sierra del Moncayo is one of the original homes of the Garnacha grape and it is the most widely planted varietal in this region. The combination of altitude (1,100′ to 2,300′), climate (dry), and limestone soils provides all the necessary raw materials to make wines of excellent quality.
The dark ruby-colored 2012 Viña Borgia (100% Garnacha) reveals a sweet perfume of black cherries and red berries. Medium-bodied and loaded with ripe, sweet-edged red fruit, this remarkable effort will last for several years. Very consistent from vintage to vintage, this is very smooth and supple, and a bargain to boot. The finish is lengthy and reveals the tell-tale hints of white pepper that makes Garnacha so exciting and allows it to be paired so well with pork dishes and BBQ. Very nice alternative to Pinot Noir at a give-away price.
