Domaine Les Grands Bois is owned and run by husband-and-wife Marc Besnardeau and Mireille Farjon. Before meeting and marrying Mireille, Marc was a sommelier in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris, and it is this past experience that seems to deeply influence his wines. In marrying her he not only moved, but also made the complete change from the city life to the life of a vigneron. His fine palate as a sommelier, however, put him in good stead for evaluating wine and making his own. He knew, for example, that when he bought wines, to look for those with low yields and concentration and sought out examples that were bottled unfiltered. He has had the opportunity to put these views into practice for quite some time, and the many positive reviews from the critical press both here and in France have made his wines highly sought after. The domaine that Marc Besnardeau and his wife call home is very well situated between St. Cecile and Cairanne, and it is from these ancient vines that he produces several cuvées of mainly red wines. All of his red wines are deeply colored, ripe, robust and while one can think of many flavors to describe them, the word delicious pretty much says it all. He also makes a small quantity of absolutely superb dry rosé every year.
The 2013 Rosé (a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Carignan from 30- to 60-year-old vines) offers a delicious mouthful of wine for a song. Another winner, this is made in a zesty, crunchy, light to medium-bodied style. Totally dry, it reveals copious strawberry and cherry fruit notes, good acidity, and a beautiful bright coral pink color. Drink this fresh, delicious Provencal rosé over the next 6-9 months as an apéritif, or with any seafood dish, and please tuck a bottle or two aside for the Thanksgiving meal – it will be a hit!
