Superb Old-School West Coast Pinot Noir
Yamhill Valley Vineyards are true Oregon Pinot Noir pioneers. They produced their first vintage 1983, making them the oldest winery in the McMinnville AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. They were happily producing their top-notch Pinot Pinot Noir more than two decades before the movie Sideways hit the silver screen and continue to do so today.
The 150-acre estate is located an hour south of Portland in the rolling foothills of the Coast Range Mountains. The vineyards range from 200 to 600 feet in elevation, featuring a melange of volcanic and sedimentary soils — perfect conditions for the finicky Pinot Noir grape.
McMinville - A top AVA in the Willamette Valley
Burgundy meets Oregon...
These folks are all about Pinot Noir and they’re passionately dedicated to producing wines that are distinctively Oregon and distinctively Yamhill Valley. The proof of their success is in the bottle, and for my money, their wines stack up very nicely alongside some of my favorite Burgundy releases.
In the glass, just as you begin to think you’re sipping Burgundy, Oregon terrior kicks in offering expressive notes of cranberry, cherry, ripe raspberry, and pomegranate, leading to savory notes of dusted cocoa, sage, and star anise — the palate is silky soft with nice tea-like tannins, and the long, lingering finish offers a beautiful balance of high toned fruit and warm savory notes. It’s a beautiful expression of the distinctive McMinnville terroir!
Pair this with all of your favorite salmon dishes, poultry, and soft cheeses. It’s plenty lush to enjoy just on its own, and it would be great with light nibbles on the patio.
