Our best Picpoul -- 92 Points Decanter
Picpoul de Pinet is one of my favorite crisp, thirst-quenching whites, hailing from the Languedoc region in Southern France. Known for its zesty acidity and distinctive floral and citrus notes, this wine enjoys a unique geography that contributes to its distinctive character. The vineyards are often just a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean Sea, nestled around the Étang de Thau, a large saltwater lagoon famous for oyster and mussel farming.
The proximity to the Mediterranean provides a cooling influence that helps to maintain the grape’s natural acidity, while the unique soil imparts a range of complex flavors. The village of Pinet, in particular, is one of the key production areas for Picpoul, lending its name to the best wines of the appellation.
Domaine Petit Roubie is a benchmark Picpoul producer located in the center of this picturesque maritime viticultural landscape. Owned and operated by Floriane and Olivier Azan, the Domaine is a trailblazer in organic farming, having received Ecocert organic certification way back in 1985. This early commitment to organic practices made them pioneers in sustainable winemaking in the South of France at a time when the organic movement was still in its budding stages. The Domaine extends over 60 hectares, primarily devoted to cultivating Picpoul; however, they also grow a smattering of varietals, including Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache.
Floriane and Olivier Azan bring a highly focused sense of vision and purpose to their vineyard and winery operations. The decision to go organic three decades ago was born out of their strong belief in ecological stewardship and the role of terroir in winemaking. Thanks to this thoughtful approach, their Picpoul deliciously illustrates a pristine expression of the estate’s terroir.
Their commitment to sustainability doesn’t end with organic farming; it also extends to the winery’s operations, from harvest to bottling. Modern technologies coexist with traditional winemaking techniques to produce wines that are both complex and environmentally friendly. The result is a range of wines that are highly regarded not just for their quality, but also for their green credentials.
In your glass, Domaine Petit Roubie Picpoul de Pinet opens with fragrant floral aromas framed by notes of green apple and citrus. After a quick swirl and sip, you’ll love the beautiful balance of fruit, minerality, and lift. Notes of pear, lemon zest, and a subtle whisper of fresh herbs continue to unfold sip after sip, leading to a lengthy and layered finish.
Domaine Petit Roubie Picpoul de Pinet is extraordinarily versatile and pairs well with a nearly endless variety of foods. It naturally complements seafood dishes and will sing with oysters, grilled white-fleshed fish, and is an outstanding companion for classic bouillabaisse. It also pairs wonderfully with lighter poultry dishes and salads or even a charcuterie board featuring a variety of cheeses. Of course, this zippy thirst quencher is a superstar just on its own, and you can bet it’s a top choice for the patio, and porch.
92 Points Decanter:
Creamy, lemony aromas meld seamlessly into pure citrus flavours, where lip-smacking, mouth-puckering acidity is balanced by ripe fruit, citrus peel, and ripe pineapple.
