The Birds are back! Our first shipment of the Two Birds Carignan vanished almost overnight. We were able to secure a new supply and we're delighted to be able to offer the same killer deal.
Carignan isn't exactly a household word here in the states, and although it was once the most planted vine in France, it remains mostly in the background.
Known as Carignane in the US, Carignano in Italy, and Cariñena in Spain, Carignan is usually blended with other red varietals. It's tannin and acidity profile is especially suitable for blending with Grenache and Syrah, making it a very popular addition to tons of Southern Rhône blends. Savvy winemakers in warmer areas of France and Spain have slowly been rediscovering Carignan offering both value-driven wines and special reserve releases.
This Carignan comes from a well-respected Co-Op in the Languedoc-Roussillon. Co-op wines are the unsung heroes of the wine world. If chosen carefully, they can be the best quality wines available at the most reasonable prices. The Co-0ps are made up of dozens, sometimes hundreds of families each tending to their own vines and pooling fruit at harvest to make one or two wines for both the community and export.
Two Birds is a great example of a well-crafted Co-Op wine available to us at a bargain price. It's all about smooth red berries and red Fruit notes wrapped into a lively and lifted palate. Think dark and earthy Pinot Noir and medium bodied Zinfandel, and you're getting the idea.
