Kick your Pinot Grigio game up a notch without spending more!

When we preview new additions for the shelves, Pinot Grigio is always the most closely examined item in any tasting lineup. There’s an ocean of the stuff made, and the quality swings from terrible to wonderful. I’m always thrilled to find a Pinot Grigio that’s well-made and moderately priced.

There’s no getting around the fact that some wines are more about image and marketing than what’s in the bottle — Pinot Grigio is the poster child for this practice. The result? Pinot Grigio has identity issues. On the one hand, there’s flashy-packaged, cheap, supermarket plonk that disappoints in every way except price. On the opposite end, you have the famous pricey properties that put all of their energy into marketing and none into the bottle — often purchasing wine from their less expensive neighbors. Like many things, what’s in the middle is sometimes the best.

I magredi

I magredi, “the lean,” is the name given to the stony soils from dolomite limestone, formed over thousands of years by glacial deposits along the Tagliamento River. The region is perfect for viticulture, and the wines of Borgo Magredo derive their extraordinary personality from the mineral-laden soil.

This unique soil structure also provides a special microclimate — the stones capture heat during the day and release it at night, protecting the vines from lower nightly temperatures and the cool mountain breezes from the region’s snowy mountain peaks. This continuing cycle of cool-warm temperatures helps provide the unique flavor and fragrance of Borgo Magredo’s wines.

If you’re longing for a well-priced Pinot Grigio with a bit more substance and nuance, this is for you. In your glass, the first thing you’ll notice is the nice roundness and richness framed by the attractive, salty minerality. Aromas of orchard fruit and citrus open to the vibrant yet zippy citrus-infused palate. Pair this with fish, poultry and your favorite Mediterranean inspired recipes.

91 Points James Suckling:
  •   “A layered, flavorful white with cooked apples and pears, as well as cream undertones. Full body. Lovely density. Delicious now.” J.S. (Nov 2019)
