Capitelles des Fermes Les Mûriers
Languedoc-Roussillon, France
Warm weather best buy trio!
Get these bargains on your radar for the spring and summer!
It's getting harder and harder to find wines that provide great value for everyday enjoyment. The Euro is still ahead of the Dollar and while there was a slight rebound by the dollar this week, it doesn't look like we'll return to the near parity we enjoyed over the last couple of years. Combine that with the general overall dip in worldwide wine production due to a continued series of inclement weather incidents, and we're starting to see our beloved Tuesday Night wines creep up in price.
Never fear fellow wine lovers! Here at the AWM, I'm perpetually on the hunt for the best quality wines and I'll be sharpening my pencil to provide the best value available in the Mountains.
I was delighted to find this trio of best buys, and I'll bet you will be too! They hail from the Aude, a department in the Languedoc-Roussillon of south-central France. It's a region that is influenced by both the gentle warm Mediterranean climate and the cool mountain winds, often producing a huge swing between warm daytime temperatures and chilly nights. This distinct microclimate allows the grapes to ripen slowly, producing fresh and balanced wines.
2016 Capitelles des Fermes “Les Muriers” Blanc
One third each of Chardonnay, Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc. This is really a "best of both worlds" blend with the Chardonnay providing body and depth, the Vermentino providing notes of white peach and orchard fruit and the Sauvignon Blanc lending a bright freshness that keeps you wanting another sip. A subtle but present minerality (there's that word again) adds another layer of depth thanks to the clay and limestone soil.
2017 Capitelles des Fermes “Les Muriers” Rosé
This will certainly be one of our top selling Rosés of the year. The blend of 45% Cinsault, 45% Syrah and 10% Merlot will make you think you're sipping a pricier Provencal Rosé. The nose is loaded with enticing aromas of strawberry, red currant, and red berries leading to a perfectly fresh and clean palate of gentle red fruit. The super round palate is framed by generous acidity and the freshness lasts sip after sip!
2015 Capitelles des Fermes “Les Muriers” Rouge
Another "best of both worlds" effort, the Rouge is blended with 40% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Syrah, and 20% Grenache, using grapes from both the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions. There is no mechanical pressing or pressure used post fermentation, resulting in "free run" juice that is super round and fresh with tannins that are like silk. The wine is then aged only in stainless steel to retain that complete freshness and lift. The palate is velvety smooth, packed with notes of strawberry, and red and black currant.
This trio will take you right back to your last trip to Europe and remind you of every great little bistro quaffer that you enjoyed on the trip! All three of these are super, super food friendly and will shine with picnics, BBQs, fish, fowl and lighter red meat fare. Of course, they are the ultimate porch sippers and a mixed case of these should be on hand at all times at the pool and beach.
