Cerulli Spinozzi “Torre Migliori”Montipulciano D’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG, Italy

This beautifully aged Montepulciano Super-Star is drinking like a dream!

I’ve been an avid student of wine my entire adult life, and I swear; the more I learn about Italian wine, the less I believe I know. Italy offers a seemingly endless assortment of grapes and places. Plenty of those, such as Chianti, Prosecco, and Pinot Grigio, are quite familiar and, for many, routine selections at the bottle shop. Others don’t feature the same level of familiarity and often continue in obscurity, relegated to the shelves of well-stocked bottle shops.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a wine that rides the middle ground between fame and obscurity. Some folks are well aware of Abruzzo’s easy-going and enjoyable entry-level wines featuring the Montepulciano grape (not to be confused with the famous Tuscan red: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). The gentle everyday Montepulciano from Abruzzo is a classic pasta-pizza red and quite often is the contents of the carafe in your favorite red-checker tablecloth Italian restaurant.

The Cerulli family -- benchmark producers

Quite often, an individual or family will come along to help raise an area from obscurity — taking things to the next level in a less famous wine-producing region. Beaujolais had Georges Duboeuf; it was Guigal in the Rhône, and Mondavi in California. On the Adriatic coast of Italy, it’s the Cerulli family in Abruzzo.

The Cerulli family are longtime residents of Abruzzo with a family lineage tracing generations back to noble ancestry. Their family vineyards weave their way through the hills of Teramo in the shadow of Gran Sasso d’Italia, gently descending towards the Adriatic coast. In prehistoric times, large bodies of water crossed the region, leaving soils rich in minerals — ideal for vineyards. The wine produced by the Cerulli family from these vineyards is considered the benchmark reference for Montepulciano in Abruzzo.
Montepulciano vineyards on the way to the Cantina
The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, “Torre Migliori” from Tenuta Cerulli Spinozzi, kicks the Montepulciano game up more than a couple of notches. The 2013 release is a gorgeous example of a perfectly aged and cellared wine that’s drinking beautifully now. It will be a magnificent addition to all of your hearty autumnal culinary creations and, of course, an excellent choice for your holiday table.

In the glass, a quick swirl and sniff will let you know you’re enjoying a glass of wine at the pinnacle of its development. Dusty red fruit, cherry, blackberry, and violet mingle with earthy notes of cigar box, cocoa, and balsamic. The texture is the real treat with this wine, and it’s something you only get with bottle age.

As you can probably guess, this is a one-shot deal for this wine at this price — it’s by far the best price in the country! My supplier needed to move this out to make room for the next vintage, so I’m delighted to pass the savings on to you. Only 20 6-packs are available.
