Domaine Gouron Chinon – Superb Cabernet Franc

The king of red grapes in the Loire Valley is unquestionably Cabernet Franc. It's produced in many of the villages throughout the Loire, however, the best known is probably Chinon.  The vineyards in Chinon are in a sub-region of the Touraine and are somewhat of an oddity for the Loire in that almost all of the wine production here is red. Cabernet Franc is the main local varietal, allowing only 10% Cabernet Sauvignon to be blended.

The Gouron Family has been producing wine for five generations and their estate is located entirely within the Chinon Appellation d'Origine Protégée.  Caves under the hillside of the estate extend for several hundreds of feet and offer the natural and constant temperature conditions for perfect aging.

The 2015 Chinon from Domaine Gouron is 100% Cabernet Franc and harvested from a vintage that enjoyed a longer and warmer growing season, producing a touch more richness than most previous vintages. The dark purple color opens up to notes of earthy black cherry and red licorice on the nose. The generous fruit-filled palate is brimming with fleshy dark red fruits while sporting soft,  velvety tannins and a super lengthy finish. We love that this wine is both easy and serious. You can comfortably serve a glass to your geeky wine buddies and it will make your casual sipping friends super happy as well.  Enjoy this all through the winter, but especially now as we approach our favorite fall weather.
