One of the hardest parts of my job is finding new sources of top-quality, value-oriented wines made by independent estates and cooperatives. Sure, there’s a massive amount of top-quality wine that’s imported into the US every year. The problem is most of that wine isn’t what I’d consider a value — quite the opposite in most cases.
When I do find a great property to work with, the first thing I look for is a lineage of quality from the estate’s top tier wines through to their entry-level offerings. I’ve often opined that if you find an excellent producer making well-regarded high-end wines, the chances are good that their inexpensive entry-level wines share that same quality.
I was ecstatic when years back, one of my broker connections introduced me to Véronique Perrin-Rolin and the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer Domaine Roger Perrin — a perfect example of an estate producing superb quality wines in every price range. Even better, we were able to arrange for the Domaine to create a second label of their excellent wines. (A second label from a property allows me to pass tremendous savings on to you compared to the same wine with the Domain’s primary label.)
In 1968, Roger Perrin took over the management of his family vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and created the Domain that bears his name. Roger’s son Luc took over in the 1980s and continued to build the property’s excellent reputation until his untimely death in 2010.
Enthusiastic oenologist, Véronique Perrin-Rolin, Luc’s sister, joined the estate for the 2010 harvest. Véronique”s 20 years of experience as a consulting oenologist in the Northern Rhône –Côtes Rôtie, Hermitage, St Joseph, Cornas, etc.,– brought a wealth of new experience and expertice to the property. The Domaine is currently managed by Véronique and her son, 4th generation Vigneron, Xavier Rolin.
Côte du Rhône ‘Cuvée Laura’ is made with a three different varietals sourced from the family’s parcels in the Rhône Valley. It’s a blend of 85% Viognier, 8% Grenache Blanc and 7% Marsanne. The percentages vary slightly every year since the different grape varieties are harvested and vinified separately before the final Cuvée.
In your glass, this gorgeous white will undoubtedly remind you of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. After a quick swirl or two, aromas of tropical fruits and white flowers greet the super juicy palate of yellow fruit with hints of guava and pineapple. I’m fascinated by how well this wine shows at cellar temperature and right out of the refrigerator. At cellar temp, it’s super plush and super round, emphasizing the broad, rich palate. Right out of the fridge, the cooler temperature accents the acidity, providing a little more lift and cut. Honestly, I love this wine at both temperatures!
Don’t miss this stellar white from one of my favorite Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers!
