The Wines of Eric and David Martin
We’re on a continuing mission to promote small independent producers – real wine made by real people. Tom Leiner from Grapevine Distributing (a small local and family owned importer and distributor) will be joining us tomorrow to showcase selections from one of our favorite family owned producers in the Rhône.
The Martin estate dates back to 1905 when Julien Martin bought the property and its accompanying 5 hectares of vineyards. In 1947 his son, Jules, took over its management, buying parcels of vines from that point on, building the facilities to make wine on the property and overseeing production. Today the estate comprises 67 hectares of prime winegrowing land and is run by David and Eric, the great grandsons of its founder.
Their vineyard holdings total 67 hectares of which 50 have AOC status and 8 produce Vin de Pays wines. It is planted with red varieties Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre as well as the white grapes Clairette, Bourboulenc and Grenache blanc .
These wines are rarely seen in the US.and it was our privilege to introduce these wines to North Carolina a few years ago.
Here’s a recent quote in the European press:
“The Martin’s wines possess a wonderful balance of tradition and modern approachability. They’re passionate about preserving the family heritage, five generations since the vineyards were initially planted. This latest small-batch release is delicious evidence of their talents – and a fantastic value to boot”
