Maison Prosper-Maufaux Mâcon-Villages Burgundy, France

Long-time AWM Burgundy customers will fondly remember the wines of Pascal Renaud — especially the family’s Mâcon-Villages. Sadly, the Renaud family’s wines are no longer available at reasonable prices, so I’m perpetually on the hunt for top quality Burgundy at affordable prices. One of our local suppliers recently tasted us on the Mâcon-Villages from Maison Prosper-Maufoux, and we were excited about the quality and price.

The Mâcon -- Chardonnay is the focus in Burgundy's southern most region

Domaine la Berthète

Aside from sounding like a character from the Harry Potter universe, Prosper-Maufoux has been a fixture in the Burgundy wine trade since 1860. The family built a solid foundation in the region, focusing particularly on Crémant produced in Rully and also creating a significant négociant trade in the Côte Chalonnaise.

Superstar Burgundian Vigneron Nadine Gublin made the 2019 Mâcon-Villages. Nadine is the consulting oenologist for Prosper-Maufoux, and she is also the wine director for the prestigious Domaine Jacques Prieur. She regularly earns ratings north of 95 points with all the major reviewers and has recently been named “winemaker of the year in France” at Revue de Vin de France. This wine perfectly follows my golden rule of drilling down from the top to find the inexpensive tier’s best quality!

In 2014, Prosper-Maufoux acquired Domaine Blondeau-d’Ane of Saint Aubin and is currently renovating the property to become their home-base. Over the last few years, they have expanded their estate holdings to more than 200 hectares, including Côte de Beaune whites, 2 hectares of Meursault, and vines in Chassagne and Puligny. Prosper-Maufoux is undoubtedly a Domaine destined for great things.

In the glass, you’ll immediately note the ripe freshness of fruit — notably from Nadine’s preference to work with relatively late-harvested grapes. The light golden color opens with aromas of apple, pear, and nectarine, leading to subtle notes of white peach and brioche on the palate. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless with a small percentage aged in neutral oak.

This gorgeous Chardonnay shows best at cellar temperature: 50-60 degrees. Let it warm in your glass and you’ll be rewarded by the harmonious blend of ripe fruit and minerality. Pair with fish, poultry, and white meats.
