Lo-fi meets High-delicious
Marc Isart is the head winemaker at Bernabeleva, the much-acclaimed property on the eastern edge of Spain’s Sierra de Gredos Mountains. His lo-fi tenure of organic and biodynamic perfection at Bernabeleva translates perfectly to his personal side project: La Maldición.
Isart is a passionate disciple of biodynamic viticulture and he is dedicated to making wines that perfectly represent their place of origin. His love of terroir is obvious in all of the wines he produces at his tiny garage-like bodega.
La Maldición literally translates as ‘the curse’. The wine is named after the daily struggle that the vineyard workers endured getting to and from the steep and rocky, high-altitude vineyards in remote areas east of Madrid. The “curse” also describes the frustration felt by those workers while trying to make a living off of this difficult and rugged terrain.
Isart crafts this medium-bodied, thirst-quenching red from a field blend of 90% Tempranillo with 10% of the white grape Malvar. The two varieties are co-fermented with natural yeasts and aged in cement and stainless steel tanks.
In the glass, there are gobs of fleshy, floral-edged raspberry and cherry notes and hints of cola and spice lingering along with the fresh finish. It’s a true “farmer wine”; however, it’s made with the knowledge and touch of a world-class winemaker.
This is another great wine that was originally introduced to us by former AWM staff member and now importer, Kate Stamps of Rise over Run Imports. We loved the 2017 vintage, and feel that the 2018 release is even better– there’s more of a purity and lift to the fruit along with a lip-smacking balance of acidity!
