This is an absolute show stopper of a Garnacha and may be the best bang for the buck/quality in Spain I've ever encountered!. As far as I"m concerned, there is no better Garnacha out there for the money.
Co-Op wines are often ignored by the wine press and looked down upon by collectors in favor of estate grown and bottled wines. We've learned over the years that while most estate wines are indeed quality driven, so are carefully chosen Cooperative wines. In some cases, the Co-Op is the driving force of the local economy, and dozens if not hundreds of families depend on it for income.
Virgen de la Sierra is the cooperative of the village Villarroya de la Sierra in Calatayud created back in 1954. They work with 230 hectares of vineyards and produce around half a million bottles per year. There are amazing values to be had here!
OGV is sourced from 80 to 100-year-old vines, providing extraction and richness that you just can't fine in younger vines. The higher altitude of the vines, 800 to 1000 meters, produces fruit with more balance and acidity than the lower altitude neighbors. Wrap it up with six months in well used French and American oak barrels and you have an incredibly well-made wine that's an unstoppable value.
An inviting dark ruby color with flecks of purple meets you in the glass offering aromas of red berries, cherry, violet, and a lovely touch of balsamic, The super lengthy silky and sexy palate is extra juicy but beautifully balance by the vibrant acidity, finishing with a subtle clean and earthy dryness, all with the alcohol perfectly in check.
