Superb quality for the price, classic California
As most of you know, we like to turn over a few stones here and there looking for the diamond in the rough, the hidden gem that isn't riding at the top of the pack. In some cases, drilling down a layer or two reveals some very interesting details.
Such is the case with the Paris Valley Road collection. We were very impressed when a small, independent regional distributor presented us with a first look at these wines early last year. A little research revealed none other than Michael Fay as the consulting winemaker! Michael is mostly known for his long stint at Duckhorn, producing some iconic West Coast wines.
The winning combination here is the talent of winemaker Michael Fay along with the careful selection of fruit from select AVAs. The end result in the bottle shows quality rarely seen at such a low price point. The wines are all varietally correct, show a pureness of fruit, enjoy a beautifully balanced oak treatment, and are all smooth as silk on the palate. The Chardonnay sees just a touch of oak to round the wine and add depth, while the reds age in 20-25% new American oak, providing character while retaining terrific balance. The reds are all rich, smooth, delicious and very correct varietally. Again, very nice for a wine so inexpensive!
