Quentin Jeannot Bourgogne Rouge Saint-Sernin-du-Plain, Burgundy, France

Gorgeous and affordable Red Burgundy from Quentin Jeannot Pinot Noir at its best!

The inevitable generational transition for a winemaking family is often a stressful time for both young and old. The old guard wonders what sort of half-baked ideas their kids will return with from Enology School — spending sleepless nights agonizing over the crazy notions their kids may collect during a year-long stage at a winery far from home.

On the other hand, the kids wonder if their parents will be open to the fresh, new ideas and techniques they learned during their travels and studies at the University. They’re keen on presenting the latest technological advances to their family and hope to bend the status-quo to their vision of the future.

In Burgundy, it’s a little different, and things change a lot more slowly, if at all. Burgundy and its terroir come first, and the new generation and old are united by their respect for the region’s culture and traditions. The latest and greatest technology may be present; however, it is blended seamlessly with the region’s time-honored traditions. Quite a few Burgundy families work their prized vineyards with only mules or horses, taking the harvest to their winery that is filled with gleaming stainless steel and computer-controlled equipment.

The heart of Burgundy

Domaine Jeannot's home base is on the border of the Côte Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune

Domaine Jeannot

Valerie and Philippe Jeannot were late-comers to winemaking, starting their Domaine in 1999. They are based in Chalon-sur-Saône in the northern section of the Cotes de Chalonaisse; however, their vineyard holdings are further north in the Cote de Beaune and include property in Santenay, Pommard, Chassagne, Meursault, and Maranges.

After finishing Enology School in 2013, Valerie and Philippe’s son Quentin returned home to Burgundy to manage his family’s property. Quentin continues his parents’ focus on low yields and very judicious use of new oak, producing fresh and lively wines with a solid core of very ripe red fruits.

Quentin is a real overachiever, and this is indeed demonstrated in all of his wines. As always, when you find a great winemaker like Quentin, and you drill down from his Premier and Grand Cru to the regional, entry-level wines, you’ll find a lineage of quality shared by each and every bottle.

The 2019 Domaine Jeannot Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir is just a regional wine; however, it drinks at Village level quality. This drinks as well or better than many of the more expensive Village designated wines we regularly taste. It’s no surprise to learn that this release is sourced from declassified vineyards around the Village of Santenay!

On the nose, you’re greeted with classic aromas of cherry, cranberry, and raspberry, along with hints of tea and earthy forest floor. There’s a beautiful balance of red fruit and minerality on the palate, with loads of perfumed black cherry leading to a very long and velvety finish, along with hints of oak spice framing the lively fruit.

In the glass, the first thing you’ll notice after the brilliant crimson color is the gorgeous purity of red fruit on the nose and palate. To maintain this purity, Quentin destems his entire harvest before vinification, ferments using native yeasts naturally present on the grapes, and manages tannin with a deft balance of new and used oak barrels.
