Let the good times Rolle! Say hello to Vermentino, your new Favorita!
Vermentino is another one of those grapes with a bit of an identity crisis. Long-standing disagreements go back generations that argue the correct and proper name of the grape. It goes by different names, depending on where it’s grown, and the experts can’t seem to agree on whether the various synonyms are distinctly different varietals.
In France, it’s known as Rolle, in the Piedmont of Italy, it’s Favorita, and in the South of Italy, it’s known as Vermentino. In addition to having different names, the grape responds very well to the different terroirs, yielding wines with a wide diversity of styles.
Cantina Sociale Cooperativa Leverano
Cantina Social Cooperative Vecchia Torre is one of the most well-regarded and successful cooperatives in Puglia. The co-op first planted Vermentino in 2006 and quickly found the grape to be remarkably resistant to the region’s punishing heat. They chose a small, ten-hectare vineyard site between two hills that provided the vines with a cooling wind. This cooling influence is the key to the freshness and vibrancy of the Vecchia Torre Vermentino.
In the glass, the straw color opens to hints of citrus and freshly cut melon, framed by savory, herbal notes. There’s a lovely richness thanks to the southern climate, along with plenty of zip to keep the palate perfectly clean. Pair this with seafood, poultry, pork dishes, and lighter soups and stews. This is a terrific white to enjoy all through the year!
